I found a shiny quarter and then was trampled by a dozen people.

I’ll explore Jackson County and see if they have similar things to offer.

Zen, even if you don’t have much cash, the craft fairs could give you some ideas for DIY gifts.

Some more ideas:

21st Annual Hard Candy Christmas Art & Craft Show—Friday, Nov. 28 and Saturday,  Nov. 29, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Held at Western Carolina University’s Ramsey Center (Catamount Dr., Cullowhee). Info: 524-3405.

Grovewood Gallery sale—From Friday, Dec. 5 through Sunday, Dec. 7,  Grovewood Gallery shoppers can take an additional 10% off already marked down items such as handmade scarves, jewelry, pottery and glass. A portion of all proceeds, including sale and regular priced items, benefit Arts for Life, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives and healthcare experiences of children and adolescents battling cancer and other serious illnesses. Info: 253-7651

Evergreen Community Charter School (50 Bell Rd., Asheville)—The school holds its 4th annual Holiday Bazaar, Saturday Dec. 6, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. (The event is a fundraiser for the 4th graders’ end-of-year-trip.) Local handmade arts and crafts booths, food, and crafts prepared and sold by the fourth graders themselves. Free.

East West Asheville Holiday Art Walk—On Saturday, Dec. 6, artists and businesses on West Asheville’s Haywood Rd. host a holiday art walk from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Participants include: Bloom Room, Blue Ribbon Hair, Minx and Runny Bunny, The Admiral Restaurant, Harvest Records, Blue Barnhouse, A Touch of Glass, Bookworks, Custom, Marty Mitchell Glass, Krug Creative and Steebo Designs. Crazy Green Studios, Mimi Strang Design and Pleasant Hugh Studio are located on Domino Lane. Free. Info: 333-0622.

Annual Southern Highlands Craft Guild’s Seconds Sale—Also on Saturday, Dec. 6, the Folk Art Center hosts this opportunity for guild artists to sell overruns, discontinued stock and studio seconds. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Info: 274-1123.

Here’s another one:

Support local artists and find one-of-a-kind gifts at the annual Holiday Craft Fair from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22 and 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville.

The public is invited to browse at booths showing art, fabric works, jewelry, photography, woodworking, art clothing, urban folk art, glass, pottery and more. The church is located downtown at 1 Edwin Place, at the corner of Charlotte Street.

The photo is work by local artist Peter Boutte, formerly of New Orleans.

Don’t forget, a lot of local nonprofits have shops that they operate year round and the proceeds all go to a worthy cause. Museum gift shops - like those at Pack Place - have great, unusual gifts, too, so it’s win/win!

Plus, a lot of those items are no longer cluttering up people’s attics and yard sales, so it is actually a win/win/win!

The 1,000 Villages Store on College Street downtown has a lot of third-world, inexpensive crafts.
I know they’re not local, but the organization is run by Menonnites (sp?) and all the profits go to help those who could really use it in those emerging countries.

Here’s info on the Khrusty Khristmas Festival, which is also a benefit for the Asheville Free Book Exchange.

The event is from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13 and features coffee, mulled wine, local arts and crafts and more. Here’s word from the event’s organizer:

It’s open for everyone, it’s a family-friendly event. We’re encouraging people to bring their favorite holiday goodies and a bottle of wine. Coffee (provided by http://www.greenbean-store.com), mulled wine, apple cider, and the goodies will be available to anyone who attends.

We will have local artists and craftsmen (featuring our own Melanie with her hand-knit wearables from mellowknee.etsy.com) bringing wares for last minute gifts. We encourage people to contact us if they are interested in selling their products for this one-day event.

At 6 p.m. we will be showing “A Christmas Story” and everyone can snuggle up with their wine or cider and enjoy the movie!

They can contact me (Lindsey) at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), or Melanie at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). For more information and a detailed description of the event, you can see it at the following Web site: http://freebookexchange.org/calendar/view_entry.php?id=2226&date=20081213
