So now department store Belk is carry a line of home products “inspired by Biltmore Estate’s craftsmanship, beauty, and legacy of gracious hospitality.” According to Belk’s Web site, “Initially ranging from fine linens and accessories to china and cookware, Belk’s Biltmore For Your Home products are available at many of the 278 Belk stores located throughout the Southeast.”

Though I know the Biltmore Estate is synonymous with Asheville style for many people (most of them living out of state), when I think Asheville style there are plenty of local designers, crafters and artists I’d rather turn to for unique home decor. Here’s where I’d start shopping:

• Woodworker Fatie Atkinson (I don’t know of a Web site; view his work here: http://www.grovewood.com/furniture.php?artist=atkinson )

• Potter Kyle Carpenter (http://www.carpenterpottery.com/)

• Painter Wendy Witson (http://www.wendywhitson.com)

• Glass artist Rick Melby (http://www.rickmelby.com/)

• Painter Ursula Gullow (http://ursulagullow.com/)

• Potter Julie Covington (no Web site; Phil Mechanic Studios)

• Furniture makers The Old Wood Company—they use reclaimed wood, including American Chestnut (http://www.theoldwoodco.com)
