Remember, there may be more famous or notorious twitterers in Asheville, but if they’re not on this list it’s because they haven’t listed their location as ‘Asheville.’
The thing to keep in mind is that that list is generated based on volume of tweets (posts to Twitter), and that volume does not equal quality. I’m not trying to put anyone down, but I could post something lame every 5 minutes and get to the top pretty quickly. I have had to unfollow several people for that reason.
That’s the problem with Twitter: finding a good balance between signal and noise.

Actually, the factor determining highest ‘score’ is not the volume of tweets but the number of followers an individual has. And with that is the equally disparaging caveat that just because others ‘friend’ you doesn’t mean they are 1) active in twitter 2) actually interested in your posts. One could not get to the top of the list by just posting like a madman, but could get near the top of the list by bugging people to follow you or join and follow. I say ‘near the top’ because the top because the top asheville twitter is Kelby Carr (TypeAMom) with 3,818 followers, 10,048 tweets who joined twitter 1.6 years ago.
But back to the signal to noise ratio, i also have had to unfollow some people who seem to think that their every bathroom ‘moment’ needs to be documented. And it’s tough to find a balance - MountainX is pretty good at only putting up things that are meaningful, but the AC-T seems to create these great spurts of stuff that i’d rather not wade through.
E.M.: Twitter is NOISY, but once you identify some twitterers whom you really enjoy, when it can be insightful or fun or whatever.
I figured out the twitter IDs of a couple new-media icons, and then checked out who they were following (who turned out to be more new-media icons). Et voila ...
Or go to search.twitter.com, click on the advanced search, and try looking for tweets with some key words of interest. That might bear fruit.
