| May Day parade | A band of brightly clad people, many with their faces painted, gathered at Pack Square in downtown Asheville around 1:15 p.m. on May 1 to celebrate May Day. The gathering attracted the attention of the Asheville Police Department. Using a megaphone, APD officers warned the ragtag crowd to stay out of the street. At least six police cars, including a police-transport van, pulled onto Page Avenue and blocked off the street when the group amassed there in front of the Grove Arcade. At that point, one participant was handcuffed and led into the prisoner-transport van. | 14 photos |

| Reflections in Cherokee | Thanksgiving is one of the rare holidays to acknowledge the contribution of the native people in American history. Of course, seen from the Native American perspective, the holiday is considerably more bittersweet. Conflicts with European settlers would soon see the once-strong native nations shunted into reservations, struggling to retain their language and culture. To get a hint of the modern-day Native American perspective on the holiday, Xpress photographer Jonathan Welch spent some time with residents in Cherokee, N.C., home to some 446 full-blooded Cherokees left in the reservation. | 8 photos |
