Late to the party?: The Organic Growers School takes place this Saturday, March 8, at Blue Ridge Community College in Flat Rock. If history is any judge, the event may be sold out, but the procrastinators among you might want to visit the OGS Web site (http://www.organicgrowersschool.org) or call 255-5522 to get the definitive answer on tickets.

Get off your duff and garden: The Buncombe County Cooperative Extension Service and local Master Gardeners will offer a program on growing vegetables as part of its “Gardening in the Mountains” series on Tuesday, March 11. The workshop begins at 10 a.m. at the N.C. Arboretum near Bent Creek. Call 665-2492 for full details.

Coming to a civic center near you: The Western Carolina Home Show will back its big self up to the Asheville Civic Center running March 16 to 18. Along with loads of home-improvement ideas and products, the event will have its usual candy shop of landscaping, gardening and outdoor living goods on display. Hours of the show are Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A friend indeed: A recently formed grass-roots group is tackling the growing issue of the National Animal Identification System, and what it will mean for livestock owners in the region. Calling itself the Friends of Traditional Farming, the group held its first meeting in January, with more to come. For information, contact Cynthia Sharpe at 688-4683.
