The U.S. Forest Service, Macon County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation are seeking the public's help in finding the perpetrator of a Sept. 25 rape that occurred in the Nantahala National Forest. The agencies have released a sketch of the suspect, who is considered armed and dangerous.
Health officials with the North Carolina Department of Health announced the season's first case of the La Crosse encephalitis virus, and it's closer to us than you think. A child in Macon County contracted the mosquito-borne illness, but is now recovering. Children under 16 and the elderly are the most susceptible to the virus.
