Jimmie Shannon values his bachelorhood more than life itself. And even though his friends have all bitten the bullet, Jimmy fancies himself a "wild, untamable mustang." However, in spite of himself, Jimmie has been in a three-year relationship with adorable, San Francisco singleton Anne (Renee Zellweger), who's starting to get the picture that her boyfriend will never tie-the-knot. But one day, when Jimmie's wealthy grandfather gives him just 24 hours to snag a wife or forfeit a $100 million inheritance, the commitment-phobic grandson panics ... and botches a proposal to his sweetheart, with a declaration of marital intent that opens with, "All right, you win." Needless to say, Annie takes umbrage at this lame attempt. So it is a desperate Jimmie who arrives at the doorsteps of his numerous old flames, wedding ring in pocket and good-to-go. From here, The Bachelor escalates into an farcical free-for-all chronicling Jimmie's quest for any bride -- even as it dawns on him that he really does love Annie, and that she would have been his perfect mate. While only mildly amusing, The Bachelor (a '90s update of Buster Keaton's Seven Chances) does dish up some cute dialogue around Jimmy's parade of proposals: When he approaches one ex (Mariah Carey) who barely remembers him, she reminisces, " Oh, yeah, you're the one who looked so great with your shirt off. But then, at the time, so did I"; and then there is the feminist (Sarah Silverman) who accuses him of Neanderthal seduction tactics and patriarchal agendas, until our hero retorts, "Look, I'm not interested in your vagina ... I just want to marry you." However, when all is said and done, Chris O'Donnell is a handsome guy and a fine actor -- just not in the category of making screwball comedies. And so, with O'Donnell lacking much of a comedic presence, The Bachelor relies on its supporting cast to muster whatever pizzazz that they can -- yielding a nice try, but not enough to salvage this misfire of pre-matrimonial mayhem.
