My Best Friend’s Wedding (PG-13)
Genre: Comedy Romance
Directed by: P. J. Hogan
Starring: Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz, Rupert Everett

The production notes for My Best Friend's Wedding read: "You are cordially invited to the wedding of the year. Attire is formal. Protective gear is advised ... My Best Friend's Wedding tells the funny, romantic story of how far we have come -- and how low we will go -- in the name of love." A telling introduction albeit from the mouths of press agents. This newfangled, screwball comedy barrels into the land of "Lucy, Ethel & Ricky" with Julianne Potter (Roberts) realizing belatedly that she can't bear to lose her best friend Michael (Mulroney) to his bride-to-be Kimmy (Diaz). Stricken with a case of psychotic jealousy, Julianne sizes up the interloper, "Miss Pre-Teen Illinois," and announces, "She's toast" -- despite the fact that Julianne rejected Michael nine years earlier. Julianne devises a plan to "do the girl a favor and relieve her of this insensitive dufus" by convincing Michael to dump Kimmy and marry her. And yes, as you've all read by now, Julia Roberts is back. But for my buck, the show is stolen by supporting actors Cameron Diaz (She's the One) and Rupert Everett, as Julianne's gay, second-best friend and faux fiance (The Madness of King George). There's a scene where Diaz is cornered at a karaoke bar into singing a hilariously off-key rendition of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David song, "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself," that rivals Meg Ryan's orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally for one of the wackiest put-your-butt-on-the-line moments in film history. And Everett? Well, he positively dazzles -- providing My Best Friend's Wedding with the oomph that it needs to possibly be the most madcap musical comedy of the summer.
