Starring: Adrian Grenier, Clark Gregg
The Adventures of Sebastian Cole is such a quiet, cultish dark comedy, that I fear no one but a few sophisticated college kids will ever even hear of this highly commendable film. Too bad, because Sebastian Cole is one of those coming-of-age sleepers that speaks to the world imploding around us ... a dramedy about those lost-and-found chapters in all our lives. More specifically, if you loved Bud Cort in Harold and Maude, you'll love Adrian Grenier (Drive Me Crazy) in The Adventures of Sebastian Cole, where he transposes himself into a sulking but magnetic, teen-weirdo in a small, upstate New York town. As the film opens, Sebastian Cole (Grenier) is a quiet boy living in a no-big-deal family. One day, his step-father, Hank (Clark Gregg), announces that he is in line for a sex-change operation. This proclamation not only sets off a wave of insanity within the Cole household -- it also signifies the end of life as Sebastian has known it. In time, his mother gathers her strength to move to England, his sis heads off for college in California, and now Sebastian must face his fears about living at home with the only male figure he has ever really known, Hank/Henrietta. As seen through Sebastian's alternately compassionate and rebellious eyes, The Adventures of Sebastian Cole is an exposé about life in the disappointment lane for a teen-aged boy who only wishes to blend in with all the others in school. However, as Sebastian's familial world crashes in about him, we also observe his resiliency as he plows through his developmental challenges. In a long flashback sequence, we learn that Sebastian has known only an uneventful life with this small, intimate group of folks known as his family members. However, as his saintly stepfather, Hank/Henrietta, hormonally transitions into a whole new version of himself, Sebastian's adventures veer away from typical adolescent angst (battling his parents and/or losing his virginity) to wondering what kind of man he should become ... should he ever become his own man.
