No screener was available for this showing of The Media Arts Project (MAP) presentation of the Southern Arts Federation’s Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. Guerrilla Radio: The Hip-Hop Struggle Under Castro marks the collaboration of Thomas Nybo and Simon Umlauf who met while working at CNN in significantly different areas: Nybo was a war correspondent, and Umlauf was an entertainment reporter. According to the press notes, “Nybo’s international experience and ability to document socially and politically charged stories merges with Umlauf’s extensive knowledge of the hip-hop culture and entertainment industry. Examining the lives of three impoverished Cuban artists and one Cuban-American artist, Nybo and Umlauf explore how the anti-authoritarian nature of hip-hop plays out in the oppressive world of Castro’s Cuba.”
The Media Arts Project presents Guerilla Radio at the Fine Arts Theatre on Wednesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. Following the screening, Nybo and Umlauf will engage the audience in a discussion about the film and their work as filmmakers. Tickets will be available at the theater before the show for $5. WCU and UNCA students get in for free with a student ID.
