Directed by: Henri-Georges Clouzot
Starring: Leontyne Price, Luciano Pavarotti, Fiorenza Cossotto, Nicolai Ghiaurov

Despite the presence of legendary filmmaker Henri-Georges Clouzot (The Wages of Fear) behind the camera, this is really nothing more than an intelligently floor-directed, multicamera recording of a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem. Your appreciation of it will have less to do with filmmaking than your fondness for the piece being performed. There’s no doubt, however, that this 1967 taping—featuring such performers as Leontyne Price and Luciano Pavarotti, along with conductor Herbert von Karajan—is of tremendous significance in terms of music, but as filmmaking, it’s not especially exciting.
The Hendersonville Film Society will show Verdi: Messa da Requiem at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, in the Smoky Mountain Theater at Lake Pointe Landing Retirement Community, 333 Thompson St., Hendersonville. (From Asheville, take I-26 to U.S. 64 West, turn right at the third light onto Thompson Street. Follow to the Lake Point Landing entrance and park in the lot on the left.)
