Asheville City Council’s first meeting of the month is chock full of presentations and discussions, including one by the Asheville/Buncombe Living Wage Campaign. The group is calling for the city to draft an ordinance recognizing a living wage and designating it as the minimum wage for city employees. The campaign has calculated a living wage for Asheville as $10.86 per hour without health insurance or $9.50 per hour with health insurance.
In another agenda item, it looks like the proposal for a new racetrack near the airport is facing another hurdle. According to city staff, the location of the proposed track championed by Council member Jan Davis is smack in the middle of a highly restricted flood zone. The viability of the raceway, which has already attracted negative attention from Henderson County, remains to be seen.
The entire agenda of the March 13 meeting is available here.

well, you can do what the punks and hippes have been doing in this town for years. you can eat trash, shoplift food from earthfare, jettison any unnecesarry bills (cell phone, cable, car payments etc) and cram yourself into a house with, like, 10 other people so your rent is only about 50 bucks a month. |
