I have not read yet why a valued piece of land on the common green was sold without any public notice beforehand. Also, I would be interested in learning who actually signed off on the sale and why he (she) has not been fired by this time.
I have sent several different letters to City Council members and anyone else who might make some sense of the insanity of a historical town like Asheville not having a strong, powerful architectural committee that will have teeth and will not again allow such foolhardy selling off of valuable land in this historical area.
Once the councils fill all the empty spaces with high-rise buildings, do they really think the only means of income the downtown has—the tourists—will not stop coming? I have seen this happen in other historical towns without a strong architectural committee and, yes, the tourists do stop coming and the downtown dies.
