It is ironic that President Barack Obama chose Asheville, both as a vacation spot and as a place for economic speeches of late, given what I have to say. But I don't wish to speak to those in power, beg them for an audience, change or hope. I'd like to address Asheville’s working people, its poor and the powerless.
Hundreds of local residents gathered at Pack Square to voice their solidarity with the unions in Wisconsin on Saturday, Feb. 26. One of similar events being held in all 50 states, the rally was coordinated by MoveOn.Org and endorsed by 30 organizations, such as the Sierra Club and the Campaign for Community Change.
At this evening's meeting, Asheville City Council voted to raise various construction, planning and transit fees, as well as water fees; decided what to ask our local delegation what to push for in Raleigh; heard a Civic Center report; and held off deciding whether to support a League of Municipalities effort to release local governments from having to bargain collectively with unions.
